Planning for Long-term care is not only nursing-home care. It is the ongoing assistance a person may need because of aging, illness, disability, or cognitive decline—often while remaining at home.
Care may include help with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, or managing a cognitive impairment. Depending on the individual’s needs and the policy selected, services may be provided at home, through adult day care, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility.
A long-term care need can affect more than health—it can affect retirement income, savings, family responsibilities, and the choices available to a spouse or adult children.
Planning ahead can help you:
Long-term care insurance may not be appropriate for everyone. The right approach depends on health, age, income, assets, family support, personal preferences, and the ability to maintain premiums over time.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your goals, planning may include one or more of the following:
Traditional long-term care insurance is designed primarily to help pay for qualifying long-term care expenses. Policies may provide benefits for care received at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility, subject to the terms of the policy.
Asset-based long-term care solutions combine long-term care benefits with life insurance or an annuity. These strategies may provide benefits for qualifying care needs and may also offer a death benefit or remaining value for beneficiaries if long-term care benefits are not fully used, subject to policy terms.
Certain life insurance policies may offer an optional long-term care, chronic illness, or accelerated death benefit rider. If eligibility requirements are met, the policy may allow access to a portion of the death benefit during the insured’s lifetime to help address qualifying care expenses.
These riders are not identical to traditional long-term care insurance. Benefits, eligibility requirements, monthly limits, payment methods, policy values, and tax treatment vary by carrier and policy. Accessing benefits during life generally reduces the death benefit available to beneficiaries.
Many long-term care policies use benefit triggers based on the need for substantial assistance with activities of daily living—such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, or continence—or the need for supervision because of a qualifying cognitive impairment. Actual benefit triggers, waiting periods, covered services, and payment provisions vary by policy.
A long-term care strategy should reflect your personal priorities—not just a product. We help clients review their potential options in the context of their retirement income, family situation, health history, existing assets, and legacy goals.
We can help you understand available options and determine whether traditional long-term care insurance, an asset-based solution, or life insurance with living benefits may fit your overall plan
